  • Lead teams with resilience and a willingness to tackle challenges, while consistently achieving strong results.

Ways of Working

  • Avoid titles or honorifics, and de-emphasize hierarchy. Prioritize business needs and show flexibility in reporting lines.
  • Take ownership of your scope without a territorial mindset, and seek solutions that best serve the bigger picture.
  • View leadership as a responsibility, not a privilege. Focus on impact and demand more of yourself as you take on bigger and more complex responsibilities.
  • No complacency. Be proactive in pursuing knowledge and understanding external changes, and avoid being confined to internal information.
  • Avoid self-congratulation. Measure results factoring in both external perspectives and real impact.
  • Stay focused, and direct resources to our most important goals.
  • Seek first-hand information and build a strong basis for judgement.
  • Remain hands-on whenever needed.
  • When delegating, maintain ownership of the outcome. Track execution, course-correct early, and be the backstop when needed.

Leading the Team

  • Ensure sufficient information and context flow, and avoid information gaps.
  • Encourage participation from everyone to develop better ideas. Avoid having one voice dominate decision-making, and make decisions based on sufficient information.
  • Hire for core capabilities, qualities, and potential, rather than relying on resume highlights such as titles or the name recognition of past employers.
  • Keep strengthening the team. Build a strong talent pipeline. Be open to hiring or developing people more capable than yourself.
  • Lead without biases or personal preferences. Resist being "managed up" by your team.
  • Believe in people's potential, develop the team on the job, and provide the right opportunities to grow.
  • When solving management problems, be patient, but firm on our principles.
  • Differentiate rewards based on performance and contributions. Identify and reward strong results generously, while being realistic and honest about underperformance.
  • Proactively manage low-performance cases in the team, staying lean and efficient.
  • Be a role model of ByteStyle through daily actions and be responsible for team culture.
  • Be fair and trustworthy. Uphold high ethical standards. Create a work environment that promotes simplicity and integrity.

Our Founders

Yiming Zhang

Founder of ByteDance

Yiming Zhang

Yiming Zhang is an engineer and an entrepreneur. Yiming held key tech positions at two emerging online platforms early on in his career, worked at Microsoft, and founded a search engine that helped users find housing information. He founded ByteDance with Rubo Liang in 2012, which has since developed a wide range of globally acclaimed products and services, including Toutiao, Douyin, TikTok, Lark, Doubao, Dola, and Volcano Engine.

Yiming served as the Chief Executive Officer of ByteDance from 2012 to 2021. Since then, Yiming has dedicated his focus to long-term strategy, organizational culture, and social responsibility. He believes that a company should be developed as a product and advocates maintaining an "ordinary mind" to ensure long-term corporate development. He hopes that ByteDance is a company that embodies "pragmatic romanticism".

Rubo has been the Chief Executive Officer of ByteDance since late 2021.

OurJourney

Our journey started in March 2012 when Yiming Zhang and Rubo Liang founded ByteDance in a small four-bedroom apartment in Beijing, China.

They started out with the hope to connect people and information, and distribute information more efficiently, which led to the name ByteDance, with "byte" representing a basic unit of information that serves as the core of information distribution.

ByteDance is a technology-driven company. We believe that technological progress can broaden the ways people create and experience the world. For ByteDance, trading computing for intelligence and using that intelligence to elevate creativity and user experience has been our consistent approach — from the recommendation era to the AI era.

Today, ByteDance is a global company with offices and localized teams across six continents and diverse markets worldwide. Our people bring with them a rich diversity of cultures and backgrounds, yet we are united by a shared mission, and we take on this challenging, meaningful journey together.
